Quite often the content of the National Curriculum can be intractable for pupils who speak English as a second language.

Where the student has a reasonable command of English, but is not at the level of the native speaker, there can be a problem for the student in accessing set texts and the like.

To help in this situation we have produced a series of books which are accessible to this group of students.

Throughout the resources questions are used to stimulate discussion, as this is particularly useful for bilingual pupils as it builds confidence by encouraging them to extend their vocabulary and develop ideas in English before they write. A selection of generic worksheets is given at the end of these resources as well as some ideas for questions that could be set in the SATs tests.

Most of all, it is hoped that through this approach pupils will gain confidence in their study of the text and through their use of the questioning style and will become independent learners.

At the end of each section there is a series of stimulating exercises, which are designed to enhance language acquisition.  The text is available on CD so that it can be added to the school’s learning platform for access as and when the student needs the resource.
